Perplexity: Hit or Miss
I think many people are missing the core idea behind Perplexity: it's built to ground answers in truth and provide references/citations to support them. Because it's powered by an LLM (which can still hallucinate at times) its core value lies in its ability to cite sources. So if you're building a project with Perplexity, what's the point of using it as an LLM without including the reference links?

Probably a focus on user experience (both visual and quality of answer). Deciding to include the links might include the calculus of how likely is a hallucination and what is the risk if a hallucination presents. If you were building a finance app and Perplexity was helping with "Come up with five fun ways for kids to start saving money" -- the user can probably identify dangerous hallucinations (however low likelihood) and the danger-to-user is low. At the other end might be a "if this is my situation, how should I balance my portfolio risk", where citations seem incredibly important. Overall, Perplexity is a Lamborghini, and citations make it run at high performance, but sometimes you've only got a Honda Civic task for P, and citations don't add value.

Dave Vockell, That's my point, if you want to "Come up with five fun ways for kids to start saving money" then maybe Perplexity is an overkill. The whole idea of this hackathon (in my understanding) is to highlight Perplexity's core value and not to show that it can do the job of every other LLM :)

most of the projects i see here is basically just a repurposed chat bot, nothing new was made, you can do that in simple perplexity and still get the answer, I haven't seen all of the projects but from the healthcare most of it is like this

Well Ganguly, it’s not about creating an whole new revolutionary technology. The hackathon is about exploring new and innovative ways to use Perplexity. Even if it’s just a repurposed chatbot, what matters is does it offer a new angle or perspective in how Perplexity’s API is used?

well Ayush I do agree on this, its not about creating a whole new revolutionary technology, its about giving new angle or perspective towards the Perplexity's API but if you look at the projects most of them are repurposed chatbots with prompt engineering done, but not all I have seen pretty good ones too, I love them, like in Health care there is this one called ClinicEngine and it is lovely
